So maybe I'm expecting too much, but I'm getting transfer speeds of around 5-6MB/s on a GB link. Straight out of the box, samba mounts seemed to be pretty slow, so I installed SSH and VSFTPD to transfer using FTP and get a real speed indication. Using a WDMDWE 2TB.
Network card on my desktop (Core2Duo 2.4) is a Gigabyte onboard Marvell Yukon 88E8053. Switch is a Netgear GS116. During the FTP transfer of abour 4Gb, sustained rate was 5.6MB/s, and network utilisation on my desktop didn't go about 5%.
Whilst doing the FTP, I also started a transfer to another PC (HP P4, with onboard Broadcom NetXtreme). That transfer sustained 20MB/s for the duration, whilst the the WDMB transfer stayed at 5.6MB/s.
FTP transfer from the WDMB to my desktop was a little better at 8MB/s. Still way shy of what I would expect from a device sporting a GB ethernet card.
Is there something I can tweak, or is it just not up to the I/O bandwidth and/or CPU required to transmit and receive at GB speeds?
