So, a few weeks ago, one of the two drive in my My Book World Edition failed. I ordered two new WD Caviar 500 GB drives, just to have on as backup.
I put on of them in, went to Shared Storage Manager and saw that the device was not detecting it. I had the hard drive tested with wddiag and it failed — it could not be detected.
I put in the second one, and this one was detected. I left it on for three days, assuming that the RAID controller would be intelligent enough to duplicate the contents of the working drive to the new drive. No such luck. When I came back, the WD My Book was still in degraded mode. Even worse, the new drive could not be detected through shared storage manager. Same results, can not be detected when attempting to test with wddiag.
I attempted to install ssh, but I can't upgrade firmware as long as one of the drives is "faulty or inconsistent". I have a couple of questions:
1) How can I fix the hard drives that have been temporarily (maybe permanently?) disabled by the MBWE?
2) Why is the MBWE failing to mirror as it should? Do I have a faulty device? I have attempted to talk to tech support, but all they did was ask if I power cycled. What?
